Fraser Elgin was born in Edinburgh on 15th September 1916. He attended George Watson's Boys' College (as it was then) from 1922 to 1934. He was then apprenticed to Richard Brown & Co., C.A., qualifying in 1940 as a Chartered Accountant.

He enlisted in February 1940 and saw service in Norway, Iceland, France, Holland and Germany, being demobilised in May 1946, with the rank of Major.

After several years as Secretary to The British Investment Trust Ltd, he succeeded to the position of Investment Manager in the Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Society until 1975. After a few years with Tyndall Ltd., Bristol, he retired to devote himself largely to the Scott Club first as Hon. Treasurer from 1982, combined with the position of  Hon. Secretary from 1985, which latter office he relinquished in 1996. He resigned as Hon.Treasurer in 2002, being succeeded by Lee Simpson. He resumed the Secretaryship in 2003.

During his business career he was a Director of several investment groups, a Governor of Leith Nautical College and of Ascham House School Trust, Newcastle.

His non-business activities included Craigmillar Boys' Club, dinghy sailing with the Royal Forth Yacht Club, scouting, rugby refereeing, squash (at a low level), reading, particularly Greek and Roman history and literature, in cruising to and visiting Classical sites around the Mediterranean, theatre-going and involvement in politics in the Borders and with the National Trust for Scotland.

Although now nearing Shakespeare's seventh age of man, he still is an active member of Quill Speakers' Club and of this Club.

The 2002/2003 Bulletin features articles and speeches by: Fraser Elgin; Judge David Edward; Marion Morton; Dr. Tom Johnston; Ian McGowan, Guy Platten; Lt Cdt Dairmid Gunn and Rt. Hon Stanley Baldwin.
