Readings from the Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley Novels

Holm Peel (used with permission)

P everil of the Peak (Ch.14) read by Lee A. Simpson

I have chosen this passage because Bridgenorth (the Puritan) is using it as part of an attempt to politically subvert Julian (the Cavalier's son). Julian is secretly in love with Bridgenorth's daughter - so in the hope of obtaining his approval for their union he unwittingly gives him a sympathetic ear. Little does Julian realise how much of a fanatic Bridgenorth really is! He tries to make Julian believe that actions that we perceive as bad weren't always regarded as such. The hero of this passage is wanted for regicide.
